Lights and Shadows: The State of the Alberdi Organs in Urdaibai
The relentless passage of time and, at times, a lack of awareness have left an uneven mark on Lope Alberdi’s works in Urdaibai. There are encouraging examples of restoration, such as the interventions carried out on the organs of Ibarrangelu, Lumo, and San Francisco de Bermeo—the latter of which is currently underway.
However, the other side reveals a more concerning situation: the woodworm infestation affecting the organ at Elantxobe; the substantial alteration of the organ at Santa María de Bermeo—where Alberdi’s original case and pipework remain, but the rest of the instrument does not—; and the replacement of the Alberdi organ at Santa Eufemia de Bermeo with a new instrument—with only the historic case having been preserved.
