Origins
Lope Cipriano Alberdi Recalde was born on September 25, 1868, in Gautegiz Arteaga (Biscay), in the heart of the Mundaka estuary, an area now designated as the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. He was baptized the following day in the parish church of Santa María. The son of José Antonio, a mason, and María Ygnacia, a seamstress, he was the sixth of nine children.
He grew up in a rural setting close to the sea, where manual labor and maritime culture were woven into daily life. According to the recollections of his grandson, also named Lope Alberdi, his family ran a café-inn along the road leading to the Arteaga Castle. This establishment served as a bustling transit point, frequented by travelers, foreigners, and troops during the years of the Carlist Wars. It was within this environment that the young Lope first sparked his ingenuity and curiosity about the world.
Origines
Lope Cipriano Alberdi Recalde naquit le 25 septembre 1868 à Gautegiz Arteaga (Bizkaia), au cœur de la ria de Mundaka, aujourd’hui classée comme réserve de biosphère d’Urdaibai. Il fut baptisé le lendemain dans la paroisse de Santa María. Fils de José Antonio, maçon, et de María Ygnacia, couturière, il était le sixième de neuf enfants.
Il grandit dans un environnement rural proche de la mer, où le travail manuel et la culture maritime faisaient partie du quotidien. Selon le souvenir de son petit-fils, Lope Alberdi, sa famille tenait un café-auberge situé le long du chemin menant au château d’Arteaga Castle. Ce lieu constituait un espace de passage, fréquenté par des voyageurs, des étrangers et des troupes durant les années des guerres carlistes. C’est dans ce contexte que le jeune Lope éveilla son ingéniosité et sa curiosité pour le monde.
