A Decisive Encounter
According to the testimony of his grandson, Lope Alberdi, during the installation of the parish organ in Gautegiz Arteaga—sometime around late 1885 and early 1886—Aquilino Amezua reportedly stayed at the inn run by the Alberdi family. Impressed by the young Lope’s ingenuity, this renowned organ builder is said to have brought him on as a worker to assist with the assembly of the instrument.
During his free time, Lope would go up to the choir loft and, according to this same account, «without anyone suggesting it to him, he would start working on the organ.» Having proven his abilities, and with his parents’ consent, he left with Amezua for Barcelona. This encounter in Gautegiz Arteaga marked the beginning of a decisive trajectory in the history of Spanish organ building.
Une rencontre décisive
Selon le témoignage de son petit-fils, Lope Alberdi, lors de l’installation de l’orgue paroissial de Gautegiz de Arteaga — à une date proche de la fin de l’année 1885 et du début de l’année 1886 — Aquilino Amezua aurait séjourné dans la fonda tenue par la famille Alberdi. Ce célèbre facteur d’orgues, impressionné par l’ingéniosité du jeune Lope, l’aurait intégré comme ouvrier dans les travaux de montage de l’instrument.
Pendant ses moments libres, Lope se rendait au chœur et, selon ce même témoignage, « sans que personne ne le lui suggère, il se mettait à travailler sur l’orgue ». Après avoir démontré ses capacités, et avec l’accord de ses parents, il partit avec Amezua pour Barcelone.Cette rencontre à Gautegiz Arteaga marqua le début d’une trajectoire décisive pour l’histoire de la facture d’orgues en Espagne.
